Matson, Inc. has teamed up with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and WhaleSpotter to outfit its container ships with a thermal-imaging and machine-learning system that detects whales in real time, allowing crews to change course and reduce the risk of ship strikes. The effort began with Matson awarding a $1 million grant to WHOI in 2023 and trials of three units, and now includes an order for four additional units to equip on container ships transiting to Alaska and Hawaii. According to Matson’s leadership, the system has reached a performance threshold of “zero false alerts,” and its commercial version is being scaled up for broader maritime use.
