Matson, Inc. has teamed up with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and WhaleSpotter to outfit its container ships with a thermal-imaging and machine-learning system that detects whales in real time, allowing crews to change course and reduce the risk of ship strikes.
